What is an Apostille?
An apostille, also known as a state certification, is a form of authentication necessary for documents intended for use in foreign countries. This verification is particularly essential for nations outside the United States to confirm the validity of the document. Apostilles are mandated for countries that are signatories of the Hague Convention. However, for countries not part of this convention, additional authentication may be necessary from the respective Embassy or Consulate.
The Process
Acquiring an apostille involves several steps to ensure the authenticity of your documents. Firstly, you need to gather either notarized documents or original vital record documents. Then, you'll need to complete an apostille request form. Once these documents are prepared, they must be authenticated by the Secretary of State in the state where the document originated.
The turnaround time for obtaining an apostille can vary depending on the state. Typically, the process takes about 7 business days once the document is received by the Secretary of State office in Florida. However, in other states, the processing time may range from 2 to 4 weeks. It's essential to plan accordingly and allow ample time for this authentication process to avoid any delays in your document's validity.
